Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Q.How many students will be accepted for next year's Pre-IB 9th grade class?
A. Approximately 190.

Q.How many students have applied?
A. Approximately 400+ students apply each year for IB Prep 9th grade.

Q.Do you interview all the applicants?
A.Yes, all whose application files contain all necessary materials and who meet the criteria.

Q.What are IB's admission criteria?
A. We seek a diverse student body. To be accepted into IB, a student must want to be here, show that he or she can handle college prep curriculum, and be motivated to do the work necessary to succeed. In addition, a student should practice exemplary self-discipline and be highly motivated toward academic excellence.

Q.Does the IB program use quotas (gender, ethnicity, etc.) in admission decisions?
A.No, we do not use quotas.

Q.How important are the scores on the High School Placement Test?
A. The High School Placement Test is only one factor in our admissions decisions. We also consider the middle school records, teacher recommendations, writing samples, and the interview.

Q.Who makes the decisions?
A. The IB Coordinator and a small committee determine the results of all materials. The students are ranked in quantitative order initially for the selection process. Should there be more qualified students than we can accept, they will be placed in a wait pool.

Q.When will we know whether our child has been admitted?
A. You will be notified by mail by January 24th.

Q.Can I find out sooner if I call the school?
A.No.

Q.How many students have been accepted already?
A.Students are accepted en bloc, with no single student accepted ahead of the group. For details of the application and acceptance process, see IB Application Process.

Q.Does the IB program offer financial aid?
A. Yes, there is some financial aid available for students who qualify for the free lunch program. We do not want the program to be cost prohibitive for any student.  The IBPA has an "Angel Fund".

Q.If our child is accepted, when do we register for 9th grade classes?
A. All students register at the time of their interviews. When you receive notification of acceptance into Lakewood's IB program and return the acceptance form -- by early February -- your student will be officially enrolled. No additional registration takes place.

Q.How much will tuition be next year?
A. There is no tuition. Expenses for exams during the junior and senior year are approximately $650. Students purchase consumable workbooks each year in Second Language and purchase AP U. S. History and Bedford Literature books  for the sophomore year. Students in 11th and 12th grade are required to purchase their textbooks.  The usual Lakewood High/Jefferson County fees for activities, athletics, etc. also apply.
