World Languages

Welcome! Bienvenue! ¡Bienvenidos!

The Lakewood High School World Languages Department offers courses in Spanish and French. It is, perhaps, a truism to say that no one can afford to be isolated in one language anymore. Even learning the basics of a foreign language can open up opportunities for friendship, cultural appreciation, and broader knowledge of the world.

Classes at all levels are available, from "My gosh I never even thought of studying a foreign language before!" to "I speak some Spanish (French) at home, but I've never learned to read the literature". Most classes, even first year, utilize materials from the "real world" to supplement textbooks and workbooks. Yes, you have to memorize to learn a language, but it doesn't have to be dull!

The department also encourages language community contact. This can mean offering lists of authentic restaurants in the area, leading local field trips, and conducting trips abroad.

Magazines

Paris Match Paris Match is so well known! It has been a news and culture resource for the French and students of French for years, and why? Because it's France's answer to People magazine. It's fun, it's not too hard to read, and it's a window into French popculture.
Terroirs of France Not "terrors", more like "territories" or "terrain". This magazine contains short descriptions and background information about the different regions of France, their customs, and their distinctive products. Available in both English and French.

Newspapers

Le Figaro Le Figaro is more like ....
Le Journal Permanent du Nouvel Observateur Also known as Quotidian. "Quotidian: 1)  Occurring every day..." What a very cultured way of referring to a daily news summary. You can also get to the complete Nouvel Observateur from here.
Le Monde One of France's premier newspapers. If you can imagine yourself reading The New York Times in French, this is for you.
Le Parisien
"The Parisian"? Could it deal mainly with news of Paris? Mais oui! A Paris-oriented news magazine.

Paris Life

The Paris Pages This online guide to Paris is available in both English and French. It includes tourist information, maps, and a "Paris glossary", as well as all sorts of other information.
Pariscope.com Want to know what's happening in Paris this week: what the hot restaurant is, where the good concerts are? Check out this online weekly magazine.

Portals and Link Lists

Latin American Network Information Center - LANIC This is a portal run by the University of Texas at Austin. It has pages of links to all sorts of subjects.
Resources for Spanish Language and Literature An online bibliography put together by one of the librarians at Vanderbilt University. It covers many topics, including newspapers, texts, tourism, and databases.
Yahoo! en español Don't ever forget that most of the major portals have a Spanish language edition. In the case of Yahoo!, there are regional editions from various Spanish-speaking countries as well as the general Spanish language edition that this link takes you to.

Just for Fun

Arielle's Recipe Archives: Mexican From achiote recado to vitualla -- how do 39 recipes for guacamole strike you? This is a huge archive of recipes from one of the many food newsgroups on the Web. Do read the archivist's disclaimer, which says in part: "These recipes for the most part, are not proofread and are not kitchen tested...This archive is not set up nor meant to be a teaching tool for the beginning cook." That said, enjoy!
Los tebeos de siempre What do kids in Spanish speaking countries do for comic -- comic book, that is -- entertainment? Check out this entirely Spanish language website!

Newspapers

El Correo Digital Regional newspapers can be so interesting! Here's one from Bilbao, center of Spain's Basque region and home of the titanium-clad Guggenheim Museum. OK, I can't resist: if you want to see what the Basque language looks like, try Euskaldunon Egunkaria sarean. Before you get discouraged, remember that Basque is not even related to Spanish!
Newspapers in Latin America - LANIC A big list, organized by country, of links to newspapers in Latin America. Amazing. You want to look at a newspaper from Belize, look here to find one.
