PERSONAL/SOCIAL
Most people are aware that school counselors can help students with college and career planning; however, many people do not realize that Lakewood counselors are available to support students in other life domains as well. In addition to academic advising and college/career planning, counselors are always available to help students deal with personal/social issues. The following is just a partial list of concerns that counselors can help with:
- Academic issues/difficulties
- Peer pressure
- Depression
- Suicide
- Sexual harassment
- Physical/emotional/sexual abuse
- Substance use/abuse
- Eating disorders
- Pregnancy
- Transition issues
- Self-esteem
- Identity issues
Confidentiality:
In most instances, conversations between students and their counselor are private. In other words, what is said in the counseling office stays in the counseling office. However, it is important that parents and students realize that there are three important exceptions to this rule. In the following instances, counselors are legally obligated to share information with the proper authorities:
- A student indicates that he/she intends to harm himself/herself
- A student indicates that he/she is going to harm someone else
- A student indicates that he/she is being physically, sexually, or emotionally abused by someone else
In these situations, school officials, law enforcement, and/or social services will be notified.
